After nine months of contract negotiations and disputes some 36,000 Verizon workers went on strike. From my understanding the workers are striking because Verizon would like to begin outsourcing work instead of using it’s actual employees. “Our objective in these negotiations is to preserve good jobs with competitive wages and excellent benefits while addressing the needs of our ever-changing business,” Lowell C. McAdam, Verizon’s chief executive, shared via LinkedIn.
The strike has gained great media attention and even the support of Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders today in Brooklyn, NY. This being the case I’d suggest that Verizon act quickly, reassure their employees of their positions within the company and of course remain honest.
According to the NY Times “The two unions involved, whose members at Verizon currently earn an average of $130,000 a year in wages and benefits, insist this level of compensation can be not just sustained but shared with more workers, if only it were a higher priority. The company, they point out, is highly profitable and sells services that consumers are clamoring for” essentially meaning these workers are striking to ensure that their pay won’t change with the addition of outsourced workers.
Strikes are something that not only cause worry workers but as a customer this is something that sparked concern for me as well. It caused me to think that if things were not going well internally how could the company possibly be product externally, especially because the number of strikers is so large and the time span being so long. In this instance it’d be important to inform customers of the effort that the company is making to diffuse the situation and to come to a consensus with it’s workers. Everyone should be addressed.
