Our time at First Grace was interesting. Before arriving I was not very sure what to expect. Upon arrival my classmates and I were immediately drawn to how large the church was, we even got lost. After finding our way to where the meeting was being held and introducing ourselves to Pastor Shawn I was able to gather that he is very passionate about his role at First Grace as well his role in his community. Pastor Shawn shared personal anecdotes about how much this church means to him and all of the positive things have come from these to churches uniting after Hurricane Katrina. I found it compelling that Pastor Shawn has accepted responsibility of being a voice for others and that he seems almost fearless when confronting issues that may warrant controversy. Pastor Shawn is not just a Pastor, but he’s also a husband, a father, an educator and an activist.
Pastor Shawn's choice to put “I Am Trayvon Martin” on the church’s Marquis was (in my opinion) courageous and a sign of true leadership. In a state like Louisiana, I believe that what Pastor Shawn has done and is continuing to do as an activist is more than commendable. His efforts to “right the churches wrongs” in taking down monuments such as the one of Jefferson Davis showed me that Pastor Shawn is both a pioneer and a trailblazer. As our work continues with Pastor Shawn and First Grace I’m interested in learning more about the congregation, it’s dynamics, it’s programs like Hagar’s House and more. Many great things came from the union of these churches after such a devastating time as Hurricane Katrina. Although this was a crisis it’s amazing to see what blessings can come from terrible things. I’m interested in familiarizing myself with First Grace and maybe even attending a service.
